This Faux Cake Safe turned out much more beautiful then I ever even imagined it would! It’s hard to believe the three main items are simple Dollar Tree items!
What you will need for this craft DIY.
- Glass candle holder, Dollar Tree
- Stove top cover, Dollar Tree
- Wire basket, Dollar Tree
- Decorative knob
- Chalk paint, black and white FolkArt brand
- E6000 adhesive
- Hot glue gun and glue stick
- Paint brush
- Rubbing alcohol and rag
The very first thing you will want to do is clean your wire basket, small stove top cover and your candle stick. You will do this with your rubbing alcohol and rag. This will remove any dust and oils from the surface of your pieces. It’s importation to do this step so your paint will adhere to the surface.
It’s time to get painting, I used FolkArt brand Chalk paint. You can use any brand you choose. You will paint a coat of your black chalk paint onto your candle stick and stove top cover. I used the small stove top cover that comes in the two pack at Dollar Tree.
I also did a light coat on my wire basket even though it was already black. This gave my basket the same flat finish that the other two pieces now have.
Once your black paint is dry you will heavily dry brush all three pieces with your white chalk paint. Make sure to paint the inside of your basket so that when your looking though there’s not too much darkness. If your knob is a different color you can paint that at this time as well.
After your paint has dried you will attach your pieces together. I used E6000a adhesive as that works really well on glass and smooth surfaces. I left a couple spots to add a few dots of hot glue to help hold everything in place while the E6000 dries.
Place your candle stick on the center of your stove top cover.
I went around the edge of my candle stick with some hot glue just to add a little extra hold.
Next I attached the knob to the top of my basket cover. I got this knob at Hobby Lobby in the clearance section, but you can use any knob you have. You can either glue your knob right to the top of your basket or if you have a Dremel you can cut down your screw using a cutting blade on your Dremel. Then use the screw, washer and nut to attach it right to the center of your basket.
Once your glue has set and your knob is attached you can flip your stand upright and place your basket on top. You will see this basket fits perfectly inside the lip of the stove top cover!
There are so many ways you can style this! Below is just one example. You can use a doilie and place cookies or cupcakes on it. You can and tilt the top to the side and place a candle and some flowers on it. Get creative and style it the way you like it! If you would like to watch the full video tutorial click here.
